About Gothic architecture

The origins of the Gothic style lie in early 12th-century northern France, though the term “Gothic” was first coined by Italian writers during the Renaissance period. It was used as a derogatory term to refer to the art style as unrefined and ugly due to the connotations with early Gothic tribes, which had destroyed the classical culture of the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD.

Who popularised Gothic architecture?

Abbot Suger is widely acknowledged for popularising Gothic architecture. In the early 12th century, he renovated the Abbey of Saint-Denis in Paris using innovative architectural features intended to increase the Abbey’s height and volume and allow more light to enter.

The grand, spacious Abbey of Saint-Denis became the blueprint for some of France’s most famous Gothic cathedrals, notably Notre Dame. This new architectural style was quickly adopted in England and used to construct Canterbury Cathedral and Westminster Abbey.

These buildings all have significant features that have become commonplace within Gothic architecture. Pointed arches were used to give the impression of height, with an added practical element of being able to withstand more weight than the rounded arch shape of other architectural styles. This pointed shape was found in windows, doors, and vaults and as a frame for figures or religious scenes.

What role did religion play in the development of Gothic architecture?

Gothic architecture first emerged in an era where religion was commonplace throughout the population. As such, religion played a key role in informing the Gothic style and what the structures were used for.

The prevalence of churches and cathedrals in Gothic architecture is attributed to the religious nature of society, serving as spaces for worship and community building. The influence of faith can be seen in many aspects of Gothic architecture, including stained glass windows. Not only do they depict bible stories, but they let in large amounts of natural light. Natural light beaming through the high-set windows was linked to divinity in religious settings. Cross-shaped floor plans and high ceilings that soar to the heavens are key Gothic elements.

What is the largest Gothic cathedral in the UK?

York Minster is the UK’s largest Gothic cathedral, standing 540 feet long and 220 feet tall. It is a beautiful structure. Even Henry VIII spared it during his destruction of Catholic buildings, opting to make it the northern hub of his new Anglican church. The Minster has many features synonymous with Gothic architecture, including a breathtaking display of stained glass windows. The Great East Window is the largest within the cathedral and was painstakingly restored in a 12-year conservation project.

Castle Ward

Postcode: BT30 7BA

Parking: Car park on site.

This unique 18th-century mansion is famous for its mix of architectural styles. One half of the mansion is built in classic Palladian style while the other half is built in Gothic style. The reason for this mix comes from a disagreement between the builder Bernard Ward, 1st Viscount Bangor and his wife, Lady Anne. Bernard preferred the classic decor, while Lady Anne wanted the more fashionable Gothic style, so they compromised by splitting the house down the middle, only for the couple to split soon after the house was completed.

Today, Castle Ward is a National Trust site and a popular location among Game of Thrones fans, as some of the series was filmed there.
