one of those "man i dont think I'm gonna ever get a session together for my concept for the best game ever". GURPS, set in a miami vice esque setting (80s miami but the players arent the characters of teh show, just vice cops) but no one in my friend group, and no one in my colleges TTRPG club seems interested. people see GURPS and just immediately get put off. I have this whole overarching story about teh FBI and stolen atlantean artifacts and a soviet land invasion in the latter half but I just can't find any players. I've only made a few friends thus far in college and all of them are busy.

oh well. I'll get it one day.

I finally have the long running campaign I've so sorely missed since covid killed my pathfinder campaign...

Me and three of my buddies(I've known two of them since middle school and one of them since i was 8 years old) got together and I convinced them to play Aftermath! by FGU with me. It's a fun system, very rules heavy but if you love accurate gunplay and realistic post apocalypse mixed with that 80s design panache and somewhat restrained optimism for future tech, its a wonderful game. For a gun nerd like me, it loving rules. Found a nice website that does a lot of the more complex bookkeeping for me.

One of our players is currently in kentucky for a family funeral and may be there for a while so I've made a side campaign. its essentially following the big attack by soviets using atlantean technology to destroy the east coast, a conventional war breaks out in europe, and the players are part of the remaining NATO forces in east germany attempting to lead an offensive. it works with two players and were having quite the time. very T2K, but I prefer aftermath!'s system rules. excited to introduce some more fantastical and military RP- soviets creating early mech combat, rogue NATO soldiers causing havoc across the countryside, I've even got a penal battalion story set up should they get caught in the act of criminal activity by NATO forces.

It's such a joy to DM again, to create stories. after a year in college and some new creative writing muscles, alongside new books to rummage for material under my belt, I feel like I can really have a lot of fun with this campaign.

rolemaster! thats a hell of a pedigree. And yeah, sometimes it gets a little difficult, and I have to have 2 separate PDF's of the rulebooks open alongside my physical copy to figure out something, but the look on my players faces when we finally figure out just how much damage that 20 pound toolbox tied to a rope does against their target two stories below is worth all the time and trouble.

I played in an Aftermath Campaign right after a friend of mine got the 'Sydney' Module back in 1984. I love all the old FGU RPGs.

sounds radical. I got into it around 2019 when an old man in a game store that no longer exists sold me on it after the cover art intrigued me. He would talk your ear off about any game you found, I miss him and his store sorely. I dug into some of FGU's other works, and although there are certainly misses(MERC comes to mind, i feel like it really could've used some cleaning up) but their aesthetics are solid and they had really inventive concepts, especially for the early 80s. Playing the games when it had just comes out sounds like a hell of a time.

I (mostly) did an F&F of Villains & Vigilantes 1e, which was the second Superhero RPG ever published (Superhero 2044 was the first). And I also covered the character generation for Space Opera.

FGU games at the time were known for three major things:
1. Interesting as hell and really well detailed settings
2. Staggeringly crunchy rules
3. So many goddamn typos and printing errors.

I played and ran Space Opera, Aftermath, Flashing Blades, Bushido, Chivalry and Sorcery, Land of the Rising Sun, Psi-World, Year of the Phoenix, Daredevils, and of course, V&V, and I loved and hated them all in varying degrees.

man am I jealous. I've had no luck at my Uni TTRPG club in getting people interested in anything heavier than D&D, hearing about all the different games you got to play in makes me envious lol. but hey! I think this group will last, so after this campaign I may run em through one of the others(i have some trouble parsing space opera admittedly)

that explains it. the first time I ever played a tabletop game, or an approximation of one was me and 3 other guys in boyscouts rolling a d20 and interpreting the results way back in 2017. I really do wonder what playing in the 70s and 80s was like, although I've read some books on the matter(the elfish gene comes to mind, one of my faves)

Anyone played Chivalry and Sorcery 5e? Looks sick to set up an alt-history medieval game that may fit into my overall metacampaign atlantean schemes...

Aftermath campaign moving to discord after everyone went back to college. It's a double edged sword- yeah we can use the aftermath online site someone made and fully integrate, which makes a lot of stuff like combat and numbers easier, but I'll miss making a pizza and a bowl of chips and having the guys over for some good ol post apocalyptic action. However it's still gonna be a lot of fun and the fact it didnt just end when the summer ended means I get to keep running the story I have in mind.
Atlantis here we come!

whose planning on buying the Rogue Trader reprint? already got mine and ive been just filled with ideas for making new vehicles and armies. like ive completely had my fascination with 40k reborn. im gonna do everything in my power to never buy official GW poo poo and make my army entirely kitbashed/scratch built/3rd party/printed and play a campaign with my buddies. trying to harvest all the articles from the white dwarf of the era to compile into a pdf too.
I'm really looking forward to it honestly.

I just watched Napoleon and I'm kinda interested in small scale (6mm) miniatures wargaming from the napoleonic era. it seems to be one of the most famous eras to wargame, especially among much older crowds, and has a long history. this makes it sort of intimidating to dive into the subject. whats the msot popular ruleset/mm scale these days? I have intermediate wargaming experience for clarification

Rest are at decent game shops…which I guess is a rarity these days.
