What is a bloody mary bomb?

A bloody mary bomb is a boozy bomb of flavor and liquor in your mouth, made by soaking cherry tomatoes in a liquor mixture overnight or for a few days. The tomatoes will soak up the mixture and when you bite into them the flavors will be reminiscent of a bloody mary.

You can add more than just liquor to the mixture and add spices and seasonings that you would into a bloody mary like Worcestershire sauce, garlic, black pepper, lemon, or horseradish, which is exactly what we will do with this recipe!

What kind of tomato should I use ?

For this recipe I highly encourage the use of the cherry tomato. Grape tomatoes just don’t have the same flavor and are more rigid. When you bite into a cherry tomato that has been soaking in the mixture you’ll get a burst of flavor and texture in your mouth that is incomparable to the grape tomato. Just make sure you use cherry tomatoes that are ripe and aren’t bruised or squishy.

What kind of liquor should I use to make bloody mary bombs?

The best choice for the bloody mary bombs would be to use vodka. However, you can use gin, mezcal, tequila, bourbon, whatever tickles your fancy. You could even use a flavored or infused vodka like Absolut Peppar or St. George’s Green Chili Vodka.

How should I serve the bloody mary bombs?

You can serve the bloody mary bombs as a snack/appetizer with toothpicks or you can add them to a garnish on your bloody mary. You could even eat them straight from the liquor jar if you wanted, we wouldn’t judge.

Before you eat them you will want to dip them in your favorite rim salt or a mixture of black pepper and kosher salt, one more thing to give the bloody mary bombs that added bloody mary flavor.

Can I freeze the bloody mary bombs?

I am going to go ahead and say no on this one. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to freeze cherry tomatoes before but they and in most instances, all whole tomatoes are not the most freezer friendly food items.

However, you can store them up to a week or so in your boozy mixture. Just keep an eye on them and if they start to look bruised or become too squishy then toss them out, just use common sense as you would if they were still in the carton in your fridge.

How to make bloody mary bombs

The first thing you’ll want to do for the bloody mary bombs is get an airtight container that can be sealed and also decide what type of liquor you want to use for the boozy bloody mary bombs.

Once you have decided on the liquor, choose what other ingredients you want to add to the soaking mixture. For this recipe, I choose to go with vodka and add some fresh dill, Worcestershire sauce, a sliced hot pepper, garlic, and celery seed. Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl.

Add a pint of rinsed cherry tomatoes that have a few holes poked in them to your container and then pour the vodka mixture over the tomatoes, this is important! Seal and marinate the bloody mary bombs from 2-24 hours in the fridge. I went with 24 hours because….bring on the flavor bombs!

Once you are ready to serve later that day or the next day, take the tomatoes out of the jar and place on toothpicks and dip them into your favorite rim salt mixture or a mixture of black pepper and kosher salt.

Serve the bloody mary bombs on a platter or use them as garnish for your bloody marys. Pro tip: save the flavored vodka for an interesting twist on a martini or your bloody marys!

The bloody mary bombs can be served at any brunch or adult gathering! Just make sure the kiddos don’t have access to them because they will look like regular cherry tomatoes with some fun spices to the naked eye!

Bloody Mary Bombs are a great addition to a cookout, brunch gathering, or can even be enjoyed during a bachelor/bachelorette party for someone who is bloody mary obsessed.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 pint of cherry tomatoes
  • 8-12oz of vodka depending on the size of your container
  • A few fresh dill sprigs
  • 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 hot pepper sliced
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh garlic peeled
  • 1 teaspoon of celery seed
  • ¼ cup of your favorite rim salt mixture

Equipment

  • 1 sealable container for the bloody mary bombs
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Cup or ramekin for rim salt mixture
  • Toothpicks
  • Serving platter

Instructions

  1. Rinse a pint of cherry tomatoes, poke a few small holes with toothpicks in the tomatoes, and place in your sealable jar. Prep, wash, and slice your garlic, dill, and hot pepper
  2. In a separate bowl combine liquor, dill, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, hot pepper, and celery seed
  3. Mix the liquor mixture and then pour over the tomatoes and seal the jar for 2-24 hours in the refrigerator. Give it a good shake
  4. When ready to serve, extract the tomatoes with toothpicks and dip in your rim salt. Serve either on a platter or as a garnish on your bloody mary or martini

Notes

Poking the holes in the tomatoes is key! Make sure that you use only ripe tomatoes, none that are bruised or squishy. You can use any spirit you choose for these, but I highly recommend vodka. Serve the bloody mary bombs on their own as a fun treat or use them as garnish for your bloody marys or martinis! Strain the leftover vodka into a jar and use for bloody marys or straight up as a martini.
