I have a fun new recipe to share with you today, for my easy gut healing gummies!

Gut healing gummies are easy, and they have health benefits! (1)

Gelatin has been a huge part of my healing journey, as it’s made a very noticeable difference in my gut health. While bone broth is awesome during the colder winter months, gummies have been a great way for me to get in this gut healing goodness all year round. Plus, they’re delicious and super fun!

It’s easy to overthink this, but there’s truly no need. Once you try out this recipe for yourself, you’ll see just how easy it is. Most importantly, just have fun with it!

After experiencing severe Crohn’s Disease, being on medications for over 2 decades, and needing to take antibiotics for 6 years, my gut is in stellar shape these days. Getting here wasn’t about doing or changing just one thing. It’s all about combined effort, consistency and dedication. It’s about what I do daily, not just what I’ve done once.

In those posts you’ll find all of the things that I would still do, to this day, if my gut health were compromised, or if I needed to take a round of antibiotics.

The human body is AMAZING. I believe that it’s meant to heal and thrive, when given the right tools and proper nutrition. Quite frankly, according to conventional medicine, I shouldn’t be as healthy as I am today. My gut was in terrible condition before I started on my own healing journey. Healing definitely didn’t happen overnight for me, as it took about two years to fully heal my gut, but as I always say, the time will pass either way!

Gut Healing Gummies FAQ

Before we dive in, let’s be very clear about one thing. I’m not a doctor or health care practitioner. Everything that I share here (and anywhere else) comes strictly from my personal experience. I am in no way, shape, or form saying that these tips will work for you, as they’re simply what worked for my body, and we’re all different. As always, be sure to talk to your health care provider.

Why is gelatin good for the gut?: HERE is a great article all about this. As you’ll read in this article, not only can gelatin help to restore a healthy mucosal lining in the stomach, but it’s also great for skin, joints, sleep and more.

What kind of juice can I use for these gummies?: Anything that you’d like, with the exception of pineapple juice! As delicious as this sounds, pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelain, which breaks down the gelatin into its amino acid building blocks. Aka, the gummies will never set. For the gummies pictured, I used 4 different combinations. From darkest to lightest I used: cranberry juice, watermelon juice, pink coconut water and for the final batch, watermelon juice mixed with coconut milk. I also love using mango, peach or guava juice.

What gelatin do you use?: I personally use Vital Proteins, as their gelatin comes from pasture-raised cows. Going for grass-fed/pasture-raised gelatin is a great idea when you’re able to, as the source of gelatin is important.

Can I use collagen instead?: While I love using collagen, as it mixes easily into any liquid, hot or cold, it won’t work for these gummies, as it won’t set. Gelatin, on the other hand, will only dissolve into hot liquids, and will set once it’s cold, which is why it’s a perfect match for these!

What can I substitute for the gelatin?: While I haven’t tried any of these myself, I have heard that agar agar powder works as a vegan substitute for gelatin, and fish gelatin works if you don’t eat or aren’t able to tolerate beef. It’s important to note that agar agar doesn’t contain the same health benefits as beef gelatin does. If you happen to find something else that works, I’d love to hear about it!

What is “blooming” the gelatin?: Blooming the gelatin ensures the smooth texture in your gummies. It simply involves sprinkling the powdered gelatin into a liquid and letting it sit for 3-5 minutes. You’ll find the easy instructions for this below.

How often do you make/eat these?: We have no set routine for any of this, especially since my gut is in great shape these days. Again, no need to overthink this! I simply make these any time that I feel my gut could use some extra love, or if I just want a healthy and delicious treat in the fridge. I most recently made a couple batches of these after Mike had an oral surgery, as he was placed on a round of antibiotic afterwards.

How do I cut these gummies?: You can cut the gummies up into squares, use cookie cutters to make shapes, or even pour the mixture into silicone molds to set – it’s totally up to you! I used heart shaped silicone molds for the gummies pictured. They turned out so cute and really fun to eat, but you might want to note that they’re definitely not the easiest or most efficient to make.

How long do these gummies last in the fridge?: Ours never last for more than a few days (we always make a double batch), but my best guess would be to enjoy these within a week (although I doubt they’ll ever last that long!).

What is the serving size?: I’m ALL about taking a personal approach to health, so the “serving size” is going to completely vary, depending on who is enjoying these. I’d say for myself, one serving could be ¼ of the recipe below (1 cup juice + 2 tablespoons gelatin). Mike and I also find these gummies to be surprisingly filling!

Ingredients

  • Coconut oil for greasing the pan
  • 4 cups of juice divided (any juice other than pineapple)
  • 8 tablespoons gelatin Vital Proteins is my favorite brand

Instructions

  • Lightly grease an 8”x8” pan with coconut oil.

  • First, you’ll want to bloom the gelatin. To do this, place 3 cups of the juice into a wide, shallow bowl. Sprinkle the gelatin evenly over the top of the juice. Let the mixture stand for 3-5 minutes as the gelatin begins to absorb the juice. It will look somewhat like applesauce when you stir it up, and you’ll no longer see any white gelatin once it’s ready.

  • Meanwhile, heat the remaining 1 cup of juice in a medium-sized saucepan over medium-low heat. Once the juice is hot, add the gelatin/juice mixture and stir to dissolve.

  • Carefully pour the mixture into your lightly greased pan. Place the pan into your fridge for at least 4-5 hours to set the gummies. Cut into squares or the shape of your choice and ENJOY!
