What makes these strawberry greek yogurt bites a healthy dessert?

These fruit clusters are a healthy dessert option as they are made with only 5 simple ingredients. The main ingredients – strawberries and plain greek yogurt – are both filled with nutrition benefits. Using a high-quality, semi-sweet chocolate adds the perfect touch of sweetness and indulgence!

Strawberries are an excellent source ofVitamin C– a serving of 8 strawberries (1 cup) has about the same amount as an orange! Vitamin C plays an essential role in immune function and helps form your body’s blood vessels, muscle, and collagen. It also helps your body absorb iron from foods and acts as an antioxidant.

Strawberries are also a source ofdietary fibre(a 1 cup serving contains 3 grams). Fibre helps to lower blood cholesterol and promotes a healthy digestive system.

Plus, strawberries contain a small amount of other micronutrients, like:

  • potassium
  • vitamin B6
  • folate
  • phosphorus
  • magnesium

Plain greek yogurt is an excellent source of:

  • high-quality, completeprotein(a 3/4-cup serving has 16 grams)
  • micronutrientslike:
    • calcium
    • potassium
    • vitamin A
    • vitamin B12
  • gut-friendlyprobiotic bacteria

Ingredients needed + possible substitutions

  1. Strawberries: You will want to use fresh, ripe strawberries for this recipe. I think frozen strawberries would cause everything to become a bit too watery and the clusters won’t hold together well, especially as you will have to let the berries thaw first in order to chop them into small pieces.
  2. Plain Greek yogurt: I like to use plain Greek yogurt for this recipe, of 2% fat or above. The higher the fat content, the better the texture it is when frozen (I find). You could also use vanilla Greek yogurt, if preferred. That option will be sweeter and you can likely omit the vanilla extract in that case.
  3. Vanilla extract: This gets stirred into the strawberry-yogurt mix for a pop of vanilla flavour.
  4. Chocolate chips: I personally recommend using semi-sweet chocolate chips for this recipe. If using dark chocolate, you may want to add a bit of honey or maple syrup to the yogurt mixture or else you may find this recipe too bitter.
  5. Coconut oil: A small touch of coconut oil is added to melted chocolate to help create a smooth finish when the chocolate hardens over the strawberries.

Can you use other fruit in place of strawberries? Of course! This viral TikTok recipe was originally done with blueberries. I think it would work great with raspberries or blackberries. You could get creative and perhaps try this with pitted cherries or pomegranates too?!

For a dairy-free or vegan option, you could try making these with a dairy-free yogurt alternative. I think this would work best with one that has a thicker consistency (similar to Greek yogurt). A coconut-based one would taste delicious, I’m sure! Similarly, be sure to use chocolate chips that are free from many common allergens, including dairy. I personally love the brand Enjoy Life for this!

STEP 6: Melt in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring between increments, until chocolate is smooth. Allow the melted chocolate to cool for about 5 mins so that it doesn’t melt the yogurt.

STEP 7: Remove frozen clusters from the freezer. Dip each one into the melted chocolate using a spoon.

STEP 8: Return clusters back onto the baking sheet. Allow the chocolate to harden into a shell for a few minutes and they’re ready to enjoy!

Storage tips

These strawberry yogurt clusters can be stored in the fridge for up to a week. Here’s how I recommend storing them:

  1. Line a large Tupperware or glass container with parchment paper.
  2. In a single layer, place clusters in the container (on top of the parchment).
  3. If needed, you can add another layer of parchment paper over top of the clusters. On that piece of parchment, you can do another layer of clusters.
  4. Cover the container with its lid and store in the refrigerator. Clusters can be eaten directly from the fridge – no need to allow them to soften. They will be the perfect texture this way!

Can you freeze this recipe? I have not personally tried storing this recipe in the freezer. While it will likely work, it may compromise the texture of the yogurt (causing it to get too hard or crystallized). You would also need to let the clusters thaw quite a bit before they’re soft enough to eat.

With that said, these guys didn’t last long in my household of 2!!! Storing them in the fridge for a few days was just perfect for my husband and I to gobble them up 😉

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • Then, place diced strawberries into a large bowl. Add in Greek yogurt and vanilla extract. Stir everything together, until the berries are well coated in the yogurt.

  • Scoop strawberry-yogurt mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Each "cluster" should be about 2 tablespoons worth. Be sure to leave some space between each cluster. Recipe as written should make about 8 clusters.

  • Transfer the baking sheet to the freezer and set timer for 30-45 minutes. The yogurt clusters will be frozen together, but not too hard to eat.

  • With about 10 mins left on the timer, place chocolate chips in a small bowl with coconut oil. Melt in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring between increments, until chocolate is smooth.

  • Remove frozen clusters from the freezer. Using a large spoon, quickly dip each cluster into the melted chocolate and place back on the baking sheet. Repeat until all clusters are coated in chocolate.

  • Allow the clusters to sit for a few minutes. The chocolate will harden into a shell and then be ready to eat!

Notes

*TIPS:

  • You may find it helpful to work in batches – melting 2 batches of the chocolate and taking the clusters out of the freezer in batches as well. This will help to prevent the chocolate from hardening too quickly, as well as preventing the clusters from melting.
  • I find it helpful to melt the chocolate in a small, but deep bowl – this is easier to dip the clusters into.

*STORAGE:

  • I recommend storing these clusters in the FRIDGE for up to a week. You can place them in a large Tupperware or glass container. Using parchment paper to separate layers of clusters, if needed. Clusters can be enjoyed straight from the fridge – they will maintain the perfect texture this way!
  • Freezing this recipe may compromise the texture of the yogurt, causing it to get too hard or crystallized. The clusters will need to thaw considerably to be soft enough to eat.

*INGREDIENT NOTES + MODIFICATIONS:

  • Feel free to try this recipe with other fruits. The original viral recipe used blueberries, but you could try this with raspberries or blackberries too! I recommend using fresh rather than frozen fruits, as thawed fruits may become too watery for this.
  • For a dairy-free option, you could try making these with a dairy-free yogurt alternative. I think this would work best with one that has a thicker consistency (similar to Greek yogurt). A coconut-based one would taste delicious.
  • Instead of plain yogurt, you could also use vanilla Greek yogurt, if preferred. That option will be sweeter and you can likely omit the vanilla extract in that case!
  • I recommend using semi-sweet chocolate chips for this recipe. If using dark chocolate, you may want to add a bit of honey or maple syrup to the yogurt mixture or else you may find this recipe too bitter.

This recipe does taste delicious, but I didn’t have enough chocolate to fully cover clusters. I see other recipes used a full bag of chocolate chips. I’ll do that next time.

Hi Angela! Thanks so much for sharing your experience – I’m so happy to hear that you enjoyed the taste of this recipe, but I’m sorry that it wasn’t quite enough chocolate!!

I’ve seen all different kinds of measurements (even less than what I’ve used here). While this amount worked for me in the 3 times I tested the recipe, I totally understand how the amount needed can vary! Good idea to have some extra chocolate chips on hand 🙂 Another tip I have is to use a deeper bowl – I find that helps with the dipping!

I made these with frozen strawberries, they do not have to be thawed, just a few minutes and they can be chopped, and they didn’t get watery. I also stored mine in the freezer, they did fine, just need to sit out 5-10 minutes and they are great!!
I am addicted to these clusters, I could eat the whole batch!
Thank you so much for this recipe.

I brought these to a reunion party last night for a fitness retreat we did about six months ago and they were a HUGE HIT with the health-conscious fitness peeps! I think I made my clusters a little too big, and they’re pretty messy, but wow are they yummy!!!

Fail. It worked well for the 1sr 4 clusters then never coated another one after. Would just slide off. Waste of time and food

I’m so sorry to hear that this recipe didn’t work for you, Jennifer :(. I’m not sure what you mean by “it would just slide off”? Perhaps melting the chocolate in batches would help if it’s hardening too fast or something? Or were the clusters not frozen enough that they started to melt?

Again, I’m really sorry this didn’t work for you and I hope that you were able to enjoy those 4 clusters at least!

The same thing happened to me. The clusters are too cold and harden the chocolate. I was working fast and still had to do 2 batches of chocolate and couldn’t get them all done. I wonder what the secret is. Lol I just finished, so I haven’t tried any yet. I bet they will be yummy, though!

Thanks for your feedback, Lauren! I am truly not sure what the secret is – I tested this recipe 3 times to get the ratio right (based on the viral trend – some other recipes used double the yogurt and half the chocolate, which didn’t work for me at all!)

Another reader just shared some tips (below) that they used more coconut oil and made smaller clusters which are easier to work with. I also found that melting the chocolate in a small but deep bowl helped to coat them too. Sorry it didn’t work out exactly as you’d hoped, but I hope that they were still tasty to enjoy 🙂

UPDATE: It is best to use “melting chocolate” NOT chocolate chips! I used choc chips the first time and the chocolate hardened too quickly. Melting chocolate worked so much better!

Just made these and they are so tasty! The recipe was very easy to follow as well.

A few notes from my experience: I think next time I will make mine a little smaller since I measured out exactly 2 TBS per cluster and only got 6 clusters out the yogurt mix. I also had to melt 2 recipes of chocolate, but I think this was either due to the chocolate chips I used or that I had to let it sit a little longer because my yogurt had taken longer to freeze. the second round of chocolate I used 1 TBS (3 tsp’s) of coconut oil and overall found this helped make a smoother batch and therefore was easier to coat the clusters in. All in all I love this recipe and will be making them again in the future

    s. I had the same issue of not having enough chocolate.
It barely covered 6. I used a small container that fit the chips in perfectly. It seemed smooth and thin and I worked quickly. The six it made were delicious though. Next time I’ll add a tad bit more chips. Maybe zapping the chocolate every 2 dipped will thin it out, but sometimes more heat chickens it so idk.
